Preview: Komedia Brighton Live

Calling all Brighton residents, there are some great shows coming to Komedia this month, so those looking for a guaranteed laugh should take heed.

First up – tonight at 8 o’clock, in fact – we have So You Think You’re Funny?, a highly prestigious stand-up comedy competition whose previous winners include Peter Kay, Dylan Moran and Lee Mack. Don’t be misled, though: the majority of participants are amateurs, trying to make their way up that slippery comedy ladder. This is a qualification stage, and the final will be held at the Edinburgh Festival in August. Tickets are available for £6 online.

Tomorrow, there will be a performance by the celebrated Bo Burnham, the 20 year-old American comedian who – after establishing himself as an internet meme and performing a phenomenal stint at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2010 – has become something of a cult hit. Producing gently satirical songs with a stream of intricate wordplay, Burnham has been hailed ‘the most exciting young comedian in the world’, and his appearance in Brighton is not to be missed. Tickets are available for £15 online.

Finally, we have Popcorn Comedy on 22nd June, which features a line-up of great comedy films from talented filmmakers around the country. The event will be dotted with live acts from local performer Nicholas Cooke – who got through to the finals of the Chortle Comedy Awards in 2011 – and sizable sketch group Broken Biscuits. Tickets are available for £7 on the door, or £5 in advance online.

Event Listings: Shazia Mirza’s “Multiple Choice” to Komedia

ALEX ZANE

HOT BREW

Hot Brew are Oona and Crispin Wheatflake; a folk duo who worship The Big White Radish. They have taken to the stage, after eight years absence, to bring their own blend of nonny song and New Age ‘wisdom’ to the people once more. Watch the short film, Roots (made by Jackal Films www.jackalfilms.co.uk) written by Antony Elvin and Alice Lowe, which introduces us to husband and wife, Oona and Crispin and, of course, the Big White Radish.

JEFF LEACH

Jeff Leach (star of Big Brother’s Big Mouth / BBC Switch / Virgin Media On Demand / Current TV) bares his soul and reveals all in this unrelenting and gratuitous insight into his sordid private life. Cultivating the habit of laughter, sharing stories of his heart break, drink and drug follies, piles, fear of female ejaculation and violent attacks! One of the most exciting new stand-up comedians on the circuit this show is not to be missed!

Fringe Favourite Simon Amstell comes to Brighton Comedy Festival 2009

One of the shows we really wanted to see at Ed Fringe was Simon Amstell’s Do Nothing but everytime we where told we could go the show clashed with another one we where reviewing.  In the press area, a private club type place inside Edinburgh Union, we rubbed shoulders with Simon but didn’t have the balls to go up to him and say hi.

So now is our chance to get to see the show that had everyone talking in Edinburgh.  Simon as you all know was on Popworld for a hundred years and was frankly the best thing about the show, when he left teh show died!  Then came his stint on Nevermind the Buzzcocks once again proving to be a class act and his stand up has been going from strength to strength

Brian Logan from The Guardian said:

“If I can be in a room with Keanu Reeves,” says Simon Amstell, “then nothing is real any more.” This new show from the ex-host of Never Mind the Buzzcocks keeps worried vigil at the border between fantasy and reality. It develops the theme of Amstell’s last show – the construction of the self – and adds what many have long craved in his standup: a little passion to supplement the thought. Erudition was already in the bag. But the greater Amstell’s emotional investment, the better he becomes…. ****Four Stars

Much of the the attention Amstell got up there is well deserved and it becomes apparent you see him walking about talking to people acting very unlike the TV comic type man he is.

Simon Amstell will be appearing at Brighton Dome Concert Hall

8pm Sunday 11th &  Monday 12 £20 (£18 Conc)
