TNC Introducers: Evolve Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe 2010

From time to time some people come along that makes doing this job beyond worth it. Passion, drive, determination, and talent are just a few of the traits you need to make an Edinburgh Fringe show successful. Joseph and Emily who form Evolve Theatre are two people with a misson and who’s work within community theatre is going to set their Edinburgh Fringe show, The Edge, apart. We where very honoured and lucky to be contacted by Evolve Theatre on our Twitter page and we asked the guys for a little bit of history and what we can expect from their Fringe Show.

Evolve Theatre was set up at the end of 2009 to produce work outside of drama school on subjects about which we feel strongly. Based in Berkshire, we are currently studying stage and screen acting at Redroofs College and we are both members of the National Youth Theatre.

Both Joseph and I have been involved extensively in community theatre and recent work at Redroofs includes Three Sisters, Breathing Corpses and the Lion in Winter.

We believe passionately in the power of drama to draw attention to difficult issues. Teenage suicide was an area we felt needed to be highlighted as it is still a subject with which society is uncomfortable. The suicide of my brother’s friend was devastating and the family’s grief was intensified as people, at a loss as to what to say, avoided them. I believe the more the subject is brought out into the open, the more people will be able to talk about it.

Having searched long and hard for the right play we were delighted to find ‘The Edge’ by Fife based Ron Nicol. It is an emotionally charged one act play but there are lighter moments. The theme running throughout is the need for young people to have someone to listen to them. We both know from personal experience how important this is as we have both been subjected to bullying but we were fortunate to have the support of family and friends. We are determined the experience should be used as a positive rather than a negative and it has made us determined to succeed as actors. Others are not so lucky and this is why a service like Childline is vital.

Supporting Childline 2010

We were particularly struck by Childline’s One Voice Campaign as we hadn’t realised that only two thirds of people who phone the helpline are able to get through. Therefore we have decided to donate all money raised from ticket sales to the NSPCC’s Childline Service. We know that Childline is vital to many children and we hope our play will raise money and awareness for Childline. We have been liaising with the Edinburgh Office, who have been so supportive and encouraging.

The Edge by Ron Nicol with be performed between the 6th & 14th August 2010 @ The Spaces, Jury’s Inn Venue 260

PREVIEW Edinburgh Fringe & Free Fringe 2010

It is fast approaching us and this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival is set to become one of their biggest, brightest and best. Last year Tim, Nige, and Carl had the best time of their life seeing some amazing shows (see our reviews here) and this year we aim to bring you more reviews, more interviews, and more news of what’s going on.

Our good friend Jonny Sweet, who’s show last year ‘Mostly About Arthur’ won Best Newcomer 2009. His style is as British as you can get but you forget how young he is and fall in love with his style. As people where taking their seats he handed them some papers and kissed them all on the head and hugged everyone. The show itself was a touch or real genius and there was nothing like it at the Fringe and his award is well deserved. See this guy at any cost!

Back again this year are the incredible Lady Garden who’s show last year was the talk of the festival with BBC Comedy presents calling them the best UK comedy group of 2009, and we simply loved their show, you can count on us for sure seeing them this year and maybe getting a interview.  They are original, creative, and some damn funny ladies, Lady Garden has become a mainstay on the comedy circuit in the UK and their new show this year is bound to have people talking.

Last year also saw the introduction of 18 year Daniel Sloss and his ‘My Generation’ show. His show was also a sellout with him holding his ground and proving not to have to resort to his age all the time to get a laugh, he is simply inspiring.  His year has been insane with him appearing on The Paul O’Grady Show with the Independent on Sunday saying ‘A high-energy of coming of age laughs’.

And It’s All About The Free Fringe

One of the more unique aspects of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the fact that they have this thing called ‘The Free Fringe’. Ill explain.  There are two Free Fringe’s going on, Laughing Horse – part of The Free Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and PHB and I can not underestimate how amazing and professional these shows are. Some, like Tom Bell, Misery Eats Company, and Hatty and Tony Rub It Better where some of the most wonderful shows you could see at the Fringe.

But if you really want to understand just what The Free Fringe is all about there is one show that was simply a breathtaking  work of art in which I truly fell in love with two Americans Leah and Katie. Their show ‘Misery Eats Company’ had a weird British vibe for two Americans, their sketches where written to such a perfect I was shocked that this was a free show, I would have happily paid a tenner to see them.

I think these guys are heading back this year and if they do you really have to see them. As performers they give it everything and add new bits every now and then making their Ed Fringe 2009 run more fun and exiting. I saw them twice and twice I was left stunned at their incredible ability, for that they have my total respect!
