Edinburgh Fringe Interview: Sanity Valve

Sanity Valve are pretty good at rapping. Mos Prob – the thoughtful, sensitive prodigal son – does the rapping and Gishnchips – the confrontational human hurricane with a sordid past in shooting loads of people – does the rapping. Together they form Sanity Valve and they rap about things.

One of the funniest interviews we have done for Edinburgh Fringe and I think these Brighton lads are going to make something of an impression on the fringe this year. More information on the guys show can be found at the end of the interview.

How are things going, you all ready for the Fringe?

Gishnchips: Fucking amazingly. We’re going to put our willies all up in the Fringe.

Mos Prob: I’m eating lots of protein and rapping a lot.

This is your debut show, have you been nervous, do you know what to expect up in Edinburgh?

Mos Prob: I’ve been up before, with Casual Violence!, who are up alongside us this year with Choose Death. I expect to avoid surviving at all costs. It will heavily improve my gangsta credentials.

Gishnchips: I’ve never been nervous, because I’m fucking brilliant.

How did you guys meet?

Gishnchips: In prison.

Mos Prob: In Compton.

Gishnchips: At either end of Miley Cyrus.

Mos Prob: We were pleasantly surprised to be wearing the same hat. Nah, just kidding, she’s butters. We both hail from Southend, and I honestly can’t pinpoint the moment when gave up being decent human beings. We spent a long time being very shit, and it’s pretty rewarding that from our initial meeting we’re now hitting the Fringe three years on.

Gishnchips: Just kidding, I shot Mos Prob’s mum and now he likes me because I’m fucking brilliant.

Have you been given much advice for the Fringe?

Mos Prob: We’ve been advised not to flop, or offend any small children or families on the Mile. I can mostly guarantee the not flopping.

Gishnchips: I’ve been told that an MC is only as good as his last freestyle. I advised them to fuck off. I’m better than all freestyles.

Tell us a bit about your show “Get Old or Die Trying”, what can we expect?

Mos Prob: Expect songs about poo, saving puppies, labia, all-out panda warfare in the year twelvety twelvety twelve, Bono, breakfast and a lot of talk about how good we are. We’re also going to be battling wack cats like The Beta Males, Horse and Louis and Max and Ivan on the Mile, so look out for those. It’s all linked to our album of the same name, that we’re releasing a few days before. Both it and the show are jam packed with lyrical dexterity and layered diatribe.

Gishnchips: Also it’s fucking brilliant. Be there or get incredibly shot in your chin.

Who has inspired your writing/performing?

Gishnchips: Fuck off with your silly questions, we’ve never been inspired by anything. We invented music. How dare you say we’re like anything ever. Homey be trippin’.

Mos Prob: Oh Gish. Mainly internet humour, the Boosh, comedy rap stuff like The Lonely Island and Jon LaJoie and a lot of UK Hip Hop as well- Professor Elemental stands out as an obvious one. We’ve performed a lot with K*nt and the Gang, and he influenced our earlier stuff a lot, but we’re trying to amp up the weird and tone down the obscenity. I want my mum to be able to listen to a track.

Gishnchips: I want your mum to listen to a track. Also I love Tempz.

Have there been any challenges you have faced in getting the show finished?

Gishnchips: Jesus Christ. We’ve never been inspired by anything or challenged in any way. We are unrivalled and unparalleled and fucking brilliant.

Mos Prob: Gishnchips.

What would you want your audience to take from the show?

Mos Prob: Gishnchips

Gishnchips: STDS.

Finally, what has been your most embarrassing moment on stage?

Gishnchips: Mos Prob attempting an acoustic version of Straight Out Of Competent, and within two bars accidentally revealing his cock and balls.

Mos Prob: I was holding a guitar. I soldiered on, and my cock got more exposure than me. Thanks, Sanity Valve.

Edinburgh Fringe Interview: They Came With Outer Script

They Came With Outer Script is the most unpredictable free show in Edinburgh! Join us as six talented improvisers take on audience suggestions to create a brand-new, never before seen B-movie … every night!

Improv is, and we all agree here at TNC HQ that improv is one of the hardest forms of theatre anyone can attempt. Though we are not picking favourites it has to be said that improv allows you to see something unique and original every night, and this is going to be a sure fire fringe hit.

More information and show times are at the end of the interview.

How are things going, you all ready for the Fringe?

Things are going really well. We have had some hiccups with our website, but apart from that things are going well. We are putting the final plans in place for the run and we are gearing up for rehearsals. Whilst we are an improvised show, this is a brand new format, so we want to get to grips with what we are getting ourselves in for! It’s going to involve a lot of harassing people on the streets to get genuine ‘audience suggestions’, but hopefully it will all pay off when our run begins!

Have you been to the fringe before?

I visited the Fringe in 2007 to see the shows and fell in love with it! The city has such an amazing atmosphere, and let’s face it, where else in the world can you got to a Jekyll and Hyde themed bar, followed by a trip through a historic castle and rounded off by a pint underneath a giant purple cow! The highlight of the Fringe for me was the free shows. It is exactly what I think the fringe should be about… new talent, and the atmosphere at those gigs was great. I can’t wait to be a part of it this year.

Best five words that describe your show?

Unpredictable, original, family-friendly, and fun!

Tell us a bit about your show, what can we expect?

They Came With Outer Script sees six improvisers create a brand-new ‘B-Movie’ each night based upon audience suggestions. Think of the great so-bad-they’re-good films like “The Blob”, “Them” and “They Came From Outer Space” and you have an idea about what we’re aiming for. The big thing to remember with this show is that each night is completely new and completely original, we have no idea what’s going to happen when we step on stage so every night is a première!

Improv is one of the hardest types of comedy/performance what is the idea behind this?

We have all trained together over the past few years, and I have taught improv for the past 4 years myself. We got to a point where we felt ready for something new, for a challenge, and the fringe is the perfect place for this. We are taking a big risk with our show, as we don’t know of anyone that’s attempted to do this before, but we’re really excited. The key for improv is to have a good group that you trust and have a good relationship with… that’s exactly what we have.

What do you think makes doing a free Fringe so worthwhile?

Like I mentioned before, the Laughing Horse Free Festival nurtures new acts and gives them a chance to dip their toe into the world’s largest arts festival. Without the support from Laughing Horse, we would not have been able to afford to put on a show for the fringe. It gives new acts the chance to show off their talents, and gives audiences the chance to take a risk and see something different. For audiences, the free shows at the Fringe are a huge example of “nothing ventured, nothing gained” and more often then not you will see some fantastic shows, and if you don’t enjoy what you see then that’s fine, it hasn’t cost you a penny! For audiences, tasting something new is what the fringe is all about, and the free shows give them this chance.

What would you want your audience to take from the show?

Laughter. If we can have our audiences walking away having enjoyed the past hour and had a good laugh then our work is done. Above and beyond all else we are here to make them laugh. We’d also really like them to have a sense of achievement. It is an interactive show and each night is different, so we want them to be able to feel like they have been a part of something new and special, that no-one else will ever get to see again.

What advice would you give someone bringing a show to the fringe?

Prepare! Look around, can you get a free venue, can you afford to travel, can you afford to live there for a period of time. You should be asking yourself these questions months before you even apply! Most of all, go with a light heart and a pinch of salt. Everything could be amazing or it could be a flop. Either way you have been a part of the world’s largest arts festival, and that in itself is a huge achievement and will be an unforgettable experience!
