Single Review: HOODED FANG / PINKUNOIZU – 05 March ’12

After recently signing to alternative label “Full Time Hobby”, Hooded Fang and Pinkunoizu are set to release split 7” this coming march. The New Current was lucky enough to get a hold of it before it comes out and here’s what we thought:

Hooded Fang: Clap

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Hooded Fang are an interesting band to observe. They have seemingly managed to conceive a new genre, creating a mix of Lo-Fi Garage rock and Surfer pop. Although on paper that sounds like a categorically dire match, it seems to work for this group and they have created an original sound unlike anything else on the scene at the moment. New single “Clap” is a surefire hit, and emphasises what this band excels at. Rockabilly guitars compliment a mean vocal melody creating a soundtrack for teens across the land to dance around their rooms to. The doo-wap led chorus is reminiscent of Vampire Weekend in it’s simplicity, yet it is still a thoroughly well thought out song.

In comparison to their previous work, Clap could be seen as the Toronto septet taking a more poppy direction, however it still keeps that raw, garage vibe that fans will be happy with. This track should become the perfect gateway for Hooded Fang to transcend into the mainstream, and after two great albums and an EP, they well and truly deserve it. Fans of The Vaccines, Ramones, or The Strokes will fall in love with this band in no time, and as a whole, Clap is a solid single that leaves us wanting more.

Pinkunoizo: Parabolic Delusions

Pinkunoizo have given us another optimistic track to sit alongside Hooded Fang’s throwback sound in the form of “Parabolic Delusions”. The three-minute track takes us on a pop fuelled journey of catchy vocals, prolific guitars and what can only be described as “wet” synth (if there is such a thing). Parabolic decisions is definitely one of the more accessible tracks from the Danish group, as it manages to tip toe into that certain genre of music that usually accompanies television adverts. Although be that as it may, it is a well-polished, enjoyable track.

The song is not necessarily pop; I guess it is best described as cheerful indie music for the masses, with it’s ‘ooing and ahhing” backing vocals and carefree disposition. Out of the two tracks, Parabolic Delusions is definitely more memorable, and I’ve found the tune looping in my head over the last few days (which deems the song a success in my opinion). It’s been hard to pin down who Pinkunoizo sound like, which illustrates their originality and ingenuity as a group. However fans of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zero’s and Arcade Fire will relish this band to no end.

The two tracks provide an ample cross section of the music on offer from Full Time Hobby records; both tracks are perfect for the introduction of these artists to a new market of fans.
