TNC Interview: Comedies Worst Kept Secret – Totally Tom

Totally Tom became the darlings of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe with their show picking up a nomination for Best Newcomers. After the fringe they guys continued to tour and produced a pilot for Channel Four Comedy Lab – the Tom’s are good is what am getting at. Last weekend saw the guys complete the final two dates at the wonderful Soho Theatre in London of their Edinburgh show which is now, alas, a fond memory.

News just in the duo are going to comparing a fortnightly show at The New Red Lion Theatre in London, you can keep up to date with them in their dedicated Facebook Page Here. And their next show, 29th November, will see MARK DAVISON, ADAM LARTER, PATRICK CAHILL, DREGS, MAX AND IVAN & ADAM BELBIN join the guys. To buy tickets or for more information click HERE.

Hey guys hows it been going since the Fringe?

Not bad. The structure of Tom’s face suits it. I just looked like I was hiding something so I’ve opted for curtains.

Things have been going nuts with TV and your shows, how’ve your been coping?

Herbal tea and prostitutes.

What has it been like doing Comedy Lab, is more TV in the pipeline?

Comedy Lab was lots of fun but we are now trying to write a sitcom. We can’t reveal much only that it is about a group of six friends (three guys and three girls) who spend most of their time hanging out in a fictional coffee shop called Hyde Perk Café. If it doesn’t work out here we’re taking it straight to the American networks.

Were you both surprised by the reaction and feedback you had gotten in Edinburgh?

No. A true genius can only surprise himself. Christmas is a nightmare.

How long had it taken you to write the show, what was the trickiest sketch you wrote?

It took us about a year. We had a full show in November 2010 and after that we went through a process of getting rid of the sketches that weren’t so good and replacing them with better ones until we were finally happy with all of them in our Edinburgh hour. Usually the ones that were cut were the ones that were trickiest to write.

How have your shows been going, are you getting ready to get started on your new show?

We haven’t started work on next year’s show but we hope it will be something a little different from a sketch show. We’re not sure what though.

Are you going to be heading back to Edinburgh in 2012?

We’re already here.

Two stick out for me, the night club dancer and the running commentary and the Psychic – who inspires your characters?

The stripper sketch was inspired by a stripclub we walked past in Washington called ‘Eggs ‘n Leggs’ where you could have breakfast whilst watching the dancers.

What are you guys working on next?

Staying friends.

And for Ed Fringe virgins what advice would you give them?

Win the crowd, and you will win your freedom.
