Edinburgh Fringe 2010: Review – The Bareback Banshees @ The Hive

The Free Fringe can be a real hit and miss. One might be the best thing you’ve seen, and the next could make you want to fall asleep. The Free Fringe has grown somewhat, particularly when more and more people are opting for the free side of things in the current climate. Stumbling across this whilst at a bit of a loose end, The Bareback Banshees is a two woman show, combining sketches and video clips, all put together to make an act which I personally found hilarious.

Their combination of random comedy and wildly eccentric characters, such as an overweight Northern record producer, had me crying with laughter at one point, just at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. It has a real ‘rough around the edges’ feel to it, so much so that they begin singing and dancing to a song, only to break into laughter and saying ‘I only learnt it this morning’, which I thought was really great to see and worked with the whole feel of the act.

The video clips of sketch shows filmed in their own homes are hilarious too, such as of a meal with a new girlfriend, and a boyfriend called ‘tie-bow’, constantly cutting back to him with a mouth full of spagetti. This show was a real gem to find, and although not a finely tuned piece, it has the spirit of the Fringe and comedy as a whole, and something to catch if you love a bit of very stupid and random comedy.
