Camden Fringe 2010: Preview – Simon Jay, ‘How To Put On A One Man Show

The supposed self explanatory title might suggest that this solo show acts as a workshop for producing and performing shows for a single actor, it is fact so much more. Simon Jay acts the camp raconteur, regaling us with the strange experiences and heart-warming events that he’s gone through to get on the very stage he uses to tell this story. He brings to life a whole host of eccentric, deranged and ultimately human characters, as well as commenting and aphorising with comical élan on ‘the philosophy of oratory’.

Elements of cabaret, music-hall, magic and dance are interwoven in a complicated and frenetic ballet of one man’s aim to keep 30 people from not being bored for sixty minutes. It is by turns comedic, dramatic, puerile and thoughtful. It chronicles all the ridiculous highs and sublime lows, leaving no grim detail out. For this man is laying himself open to complete scrutiny for strangers, inviting them in to have a good sneer as well as a drunken chuckle.

This solo show is the first major project of Simon Jay. A London born actor, writer and director who has dominated the Fringe Theatre’s of Bournemouth near the University he attends, reading Scriptwriting for Film & Television.

“…the show is psychotic burlesque; a grotesque and unseamly hour wrapped up in pretty prose, a discourse in the events of this young, easy and double-jointed soul that bares all for strangers, they’ll be given poking sticks. It’s the theatre equivalent of seeing something morbidly fascinating like a crazy person or a car-crash but you’ve been to ‘polite’ to just stare agog and ask questions and call names….”
